Exogenous copper sulfide in returned asteroid Itokawa regolith grains are likely relicts of prior impacting body

چکیده
Abstract Samples from asteroid 25143 Itokawa returned by the Hayabusa mission have been identified as LL4-6 ordinary chondrite materials and shown it to be a rubble pile that aggregated after break-up of parent body. Here we investigate particle RB-CV-0038 regolith using scanning transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive spectroscopy. We identify cubanite-chalcopyrite-troilite-pyrrhotite assemblage, phases structure which are indicative low-temperature, aqueous alteration. Cubanite is stable only at temperatures below around 250 °C has thus far in CI carbonaceous chondrites comet 81P/Wild2 sample suite. Chalcopyrite also very rare meteorite record found mostly R some CK chondrites. Because body experienced significant thermal alteration with little evidence low-temperature equilibration or alteration, propose assemblage most likely exogenous represents component an impacting

Regolith migration and sorting on asteroid Itokawa.
High-resolution images of the surface of asteroid Itokawa from the Hayabusa mission reveal it to be covered with unconsolidated millimeter-sized and larger gravels. Locations and morphologic characteristics of this gravel indicate that Itokawa has experienced considerable vibrations, which have triggered global-scale granular processes in its dry, vacuum, microgravity environment. These process...

Description: Samples from extra-terrestrial objects that are available for detailed investigation in the laboratory are particularly important to advance our understanding of the formation and evolution of our solar system, where sophisticated instrumentation can be deployed to unlock the secrets they contain. The most primitive and pristine materials are the most useful, but also the rarest sa...
