Ex situ soil respiration assessment using minimally disturbed microcosms and dried–sieved soils; comparison of methods to assess soil health

چکیده
Soil respiration measurements are commonly used as soil health indicators. Several ex situ methods exist, but comparative performances between them have rarely been analyzed. Specifically, there is a lack of comparisons intact microcosms and destructive methods. The objective this study was to analyze compare three different methodologies: minimally disturbed using fresh soil, dried–sieved 24 h burst test, 10-day incubation. We hypothesized that ( i) the rates for correlated each other; ii) strongly with physico-chemical parameters; iii) disturbance caused by drying sieving reduces regression coefficients compared microcosms; iv) produces larger rates. collected in Province New Brunswick, Canada. Total carbon nitrogen (C:N), pH, aggregate stability, total dissolved C N, NO 3 NH 4 , texture, labile were determined prior incubations. Our results showed had CO 2 efflux similar ranges. The use of integrated soil microcosms to assess the impact of carbendazim on soil ecosystems.
Our investigation used carbendazim as a representative pesticide for testing an integrated soil microcosm (ISM) test protocol. Microcosms, set up in a greenhouse, consisted of cylinders made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, 7.5 cm (i.d.) x 15 cm high. A fine nylon mesh was placed across the bottom of each microcosm for leachate collection. Field soil, (silty clay loam), collected fro...
متن کاملGene transfer in soil systems using microcosms
Soil microcosms are a valuable tool for the study of genetic interactions between microorganisms in natural soil environments. However, many factors, some of which are better studied than others, can affect gene transfer events occurring in soil systems, and hence should be carefully considered when performing experiments in soil microcosms. This paper is a guide to setting up and evaluating ge...
متن کاملQuantitative Comparison of In Situ Soil CO2 Flux Measurement Methods
Development of reliable regional or global carbon budgets requires accurate measurement of soil CO2 flux. We conducted laboratory and field studies to determine the accuracy and comparability of methods commonly used to measure in situ soil CO2 fluxes. Methods compared included two static techniques, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and soda lime as CO2 traps; a multichamber open dynamic system (OC) wit...
متن کاملAssessment of Soil cohesion of Soils on Tunnel Excavation
Excess pore pressure under seismic loadings has always been a main concern in geotechnical engineering practices. Undergoing the phenomenon in a soil can cause the effective stress and hence the shear strength of the soil to decrease considerably and large deformations happen in the area. Generally, increasing the pore pressure occurs under the undrained condition. If it can be formed the drain...
متن کاملMeaning and Methods of Assessment of Soil Health
Soil is a living system and has to be managed as such in agriculture to improve sustainability. Soil health refers to the biological, chemical and physical features of soil that are essential to long-term sustainable agricultural productivity with minimal environmental impact. Thus, soil health provides a overall picture of soil functionality. Soil provides the habitats for a wide range of livi...
