Evidence that watershed nutrient management practices effectively reduce estrogens in environmental waters

چکیده

We evaluate the impacts of different nutrient management strategies on potential for co-managing estrogens and nutrients in environmental waters Potomac watershed Chesapeake Bay. These co-management approaches represent agricultural urban runoff, wastewater treatment plant effluent, combined sewer overflow replacements. Twelve estrogenic compounds their metabolites were analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Estrogenic activity (E2Eq) was measured vitro bioassay. detected estrone E1 (0.05–6.97 ng L−1) estriol E3 (below detection-8.13 one conjugated estrogen (estrone-3-sulfate E1-3S; below L−1). widely distributed positively correlated with E2Eq, water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Among nonpoint sources, concentrations E1, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) total nitrogen (TDN) decreased 51–61%, 77–82%, 62–64%, 4–16% restored streams best practices (BMPs) relative to unrestored without BMPs. In a (Blue Plains WWTP), >94% E1-3S, E3, E2Eq TDN removed while SRP increased 305% during nitrification/denitrification as part advanced treatment. Consequently, WWTP effluents comparable or even lower than those observed receiving stream river waters, effects discharges downstream minor. Highest value (CSO). This study suggests that upgrades biological removal, CSO management, certain BMPs controls have remove from point sources along other contaminants rivers.

Effects of Watershed Management Practices on Some of Flood Characteristics Change in Haftan Watershed

Evaluation of watershed projects is one of the most fundamental problems in countries for future implementation planning and management of natural resources. In regard to lack of required equipment for monitoring and evaluation of watershed projects and investigation of management measures in watersheds, application of hydrologic models is an efficient tool for simulation of watershed behavior ...

The effects of watershed management practices on runoff production using SCS model in Anbaranchay watershed

Watershed management has different effects on the amount of runoff and sediment and alteration ofhydrological features in a watershed. In this study, the effects of watershed management on runoff was investigated in the Anbaranchaywatershed. For this purpose, the topography data in format of a digital elevation model, land use, soil hydrological groups and watershed managemetrigeon, and also usi...

Agroforestry practices, runoff, and nutrient loss: a paired watershed comparison.

A paired watershed study consisting of agroforestry (trees plus grass buffer strips), contour strips (grass buffer strips), and control treatments with a corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) During the (1991-1997) calibration and subsequent three-year treatment periods, runoff was measured in...

Evaluating the effectiveness of agricultural management practices at reducing nutrient losses to surface waters

Water quality impairments are widespread throughout the upper Mississippi River basin due in large part to agricultural production practices. Many agencies have worked with landowners to implement various agricultural best management practices (BMPs) to reduce nutrient and sediment losses to streams and rivers. However, it has been difficult to document the effectiveness of these practices at f...

Modeling watershed-scale effectiveness of agricultural best management practices to reduce phosphorus loading.

Planners advocate best management practices (BMPs) to reduce loss of sediment and nutrients in agricultural areas. However, the scientific community lacks tools that use readily available data to investigate the relationships between BMPs and their spatial locations and water quality. In rural, humid regions where runoff is associated with saturation-excess processes from variable source areas ...
