Evidence of Anthropogenic Gadolinium in Triangle Area Waters, North Carolina, USA

چکیده
Gadolinium (Gd), a member of the rare earth elements (REE), is becoming an increasingly observed microcontaminant in waters developed regions. Anthropogenic Gd anomalies were first noted 1996 and determined to be sourced from Gd-based contrast agents used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study investigates North Carolina’s Triangle Area, focusing on surrounding wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Samples obtained upstream downstream selected WWTPs as well freshwater reservoir that supplies part region’s drinking water. The PAAS-normalized samples indicate influent, effluent, samples. We quantify anthropogenic constitute between 98.1% 99.8%. Sample comparisons show average increase 45.3% estimated WWTPs. research contributes existing database demonstrating presence Although current concentrations are not near toxic levels, they should continuously monitored micropollutant serve tracer.

The Chaetognatha of the Inshore Waters of North Carolina
Plankton samples wcrc t,akcn along the coast and in the sounds of North Carolina to determine the inshore distribul ion of the Chact~ognatha. Five species were found within ten miles of the coast. The large northern sounds with water of reduced salinity do not appear to support an appreciable chaetognath populalion. SarJitta hispida and 8. tenuis, the two characteristic inshore spccics, wcrc co...
متن کاملInfaunal Marsh Foraminifera From the Outer Banks, North Carolina, USA
The distribution and abundance of live (rose Bengal stained) and dead, shallow infaunal (0–1 cm depth) and deep infaunal (>1 cm depth) benthic foraminifera have been documented at three locations representing different salinity settings on the fringing marshes along the Pamlico Sound and Currituck Sound coasts of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Two cores taken at each site represent the lower and...

During an investigation of an outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+), we identified unpasteurized tempeh as a novel food vehicle and Rhizopus spp. starter culture as the source of the contamination. Safe handling of uncooked, unpasteurized tempeh should be emphasized for prevention of foodborne illnesses.
متن کاملNephrolithiasis in free-ranging North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) in North Carolina, USA.
The North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) serves as an indicator species for environmental monitoring, is prized as a valuable furbearer, and is a popular display animal in zoologic collections. Nephrolithiasis has been reported as a frequent problem in other free-ranging and captive otter species but is rarely reported in North American river otters. In this study, we compared the pre...
