Evaluation of swallowing pattern sound in patients with temporomandibular disorder

Objectives: The impairment of the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles has a negative impact on functions stomatognathic system, such as swallowing. Thus, an atypical swallowing pattern may contribute to development disorder (TMD). aim present study was evaluate acoustic aspects determine occurrence dynamics. Methods: Sixty-two individuals [16 males (25.8%) 46 females (74.2%); mean age 39.84 (± 9.40); 47 with TMD 15 without TMD] were evaluated using ultrasound detector during three consistencies: liquid, pasty solid. signals recorded subsequently analyzed DeglutiSom® software. Results: majority sample (81%) presented biodynamics, significantly greater frequency food residuals for consistencies. signal suggestive aspiration more frequent liquid consistency (37% group). Conclusion: There is relation between pattern, which underscores need multidisciplinary evaluation this disorder.
