Evaluation of parents' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding self-medication for their children’s dental problems during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract Background Self-medication refers to taking medicine without consultation with a doctor or dentist, and it is an important health issue, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are no data about parents’ SM practices for their children’s dental problems The present study aims evaluate knowledge, attitudes, regarding self-medication pandemic in Northern Turkey. Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out pediatric clinic at Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department Pediatric immediately after lockdown ended. total 389 parents who agreed participate completed questionnaire from July 1 October 1. 18 items designed collect information on knowledge attitudes when, why, how use drugs medicating children. collected were analyzed using descriptive analytical statistics (chi-square test). Results majority (n = 273; 70.2%) practiced children's problems. previously prescribed medications usually preferred by 179; 62.2%). Analgesics (98%) most commonly used medicines Conclusion Prevalence high Turkey Therefore, new healthcare services, such as teledentistry, may be useful overcome related children times when ability reach providers limited, pandemics.
