Evaluation of motor development and effect of physical therapy intervention in surgical neonates in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify the applicability of Test Infant Motor Performance (TIMP) in surgical neonates as a tool for evaluating motor performance and evaluate benefit physical therapy. Surgical neonates, divided into group without therapy (n=38) with (n=38), were evaluated by TIMP reasssment two weeks later. The performed standardized exercises sensory stimulation once day, whereas other received usual care from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. predominant diagnosis both groups was gastroschisis, followed congenital diaphragmatic hernia. In initial evaluation, equal between groups, classified “below average” age, z-score=−1.28 (p=0.992). reassessment, presented better scores (p<0.001) higher difference z-score (p<0.001), percentage “within (44% 2.6% no group), well weight gain (p=0.038). We found worsening 10.5% reassment. improved 81.6% only 13.2% individuals (p<0.001). Conclusion: safely effectively applied newborns; notably, test must be professionals experienced neonates. intervention beneficial, significantly improving performance, if early, it may adequate development these even before hospital discharge.
