چکیده
This study explores the evaluation of (im)politeness, which is made by a hearer (or beneficiary). Although discursive researchers advocate importance (im)politeness in politeness research, empirical studies on are still limited. The non-linguistic aspect has not been much researched previous studies. tries to fill these gaps focusing from perspective. Among many other things, attentiveness (demonstrator’s preemptive response beneficiary’s verbal/non-verbal cues or situations surrounding beneficiary and demonstrator, takes form offering) focused this study, making cross-cultural (Japanese American) cross-generational (university students their parents’ age groups) comparisons. data were collected through questionnaire, consisted six situations, interviews. 298 people university students, Japanese parents American students) served as participants. results questionnaire show that there significant differences among participants two those interview revealing most evaluated positively, except situations. contributes further understanding perspective with well similarities.
