Evaluation of Air Quality inside Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Used by Firefighters

نویسندگان

چکیده

(1) Background: When a fire breaks out, combustibles are burned and toxic substances such as carbon monoxide (CO), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benzene, hydrogen cyanide produced. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the air quality inside self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) by comparing it that in environment where SCBA charger installed. (2) Methods: design was simulation-based case-control experiment study, conducted at two stations located on land water. charging SCBA, differentiated according presence or absence exposure harmful degree exposure. room installed station garages water, which were not completely isolated from substances, evaluated. CO, dioxide (CO2), oil mist measured analyzed determine SCBA. (3) Results: In case firefighting stations, mean CO among internal items 20 times higher than outside safe range group with highest sites buildings hazardous substances. levels all water be floating station. (4) Conclusions: It confirmed installation an can affect safety charged components. results actively used for operation management environments when building future hygiene, safety, health firefighters.

Absolute vs. Weight-Related Maximum Oxygen Uptake in Firefighters: Fitness Evaluation with and without Protective Clothing and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus among Age Group

During fire emergencies, firefighters wear personal protective devices (PC) and a self-contained breathing apparatus (S.C.B.A.) to be protected from injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of aerobic level in 197 firefighters (age: 34±7 yr; BMI: 24.4±2.3 kg.m-2), evaluated by a Queen's College Step field Test (QCST), performed with and without fire protective garm...

Effects of helium and 40% O2 on graded exercise with self-contained breathing apparatus.

Maximal exercise performance is decreased when breathing from a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), owing to a ventilatory limitation imposed by the increased expiratory resistance. To test the hypothesis that decreasing the density of the breathing gas would improve maximal exercise performance, we studied 15 men during four graded exercise tests with the SCBA. Participants breathed a d...

Effects of self-contained breathing apparatus on ventricular function during strenuous exercise.

The purpose of this study was to investigate left-ventricular function during strenuous exercise with the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). With the use of two-dimensional echocardiography, images of the left ventricle (LV) were acquired during sustained exercise (3 x 10 min) under two conditions: 1) SCBA, or 2) low resistance breathing valve. Twenty healthy men volunteered for the stu...

Experimental and modeling study of thermal exposure of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

An experimental apparatus designed to study firefighter safety equipment exposed to a thermal environment was developed. The apparatus consisted of an elevated temperature flow loop with the ability to heat the air stream up to 200°C. The thermal and flow conditions at the test section were characterized using thermocouples and bi-directional probes. The safety equipment examined in this study ...

Design of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) using a carbon fibre reinforced polymer and filament winding

The design of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which is an extremely important device for firefighting on board of ships, covers not only in-service loadings, but also a proper selection of materials, manufacturing processes, as well as the specification of other construction details, such as hydrostatic test parameters, among others. The work developed and presented in this manuscr...
