Evaluating the Democratic Quality of Local Democratic Practices – Sampling Seven Frameworks

There has been an upsurge in more participatory, interactive and citizen-oriented governance practices all around the world since 1990s. What they have common is emphasis on mobilising citizens stakeholders affected, strengthening local communities, ensuring efficient planning solutions, securing enhanced legitimacy for existing governing institutions. Conversely, we witnessed a growing interest designing frameworks evaluating democratic quality of these innovations, asking questions such as extent to which actually are enhancing democracy? This article juxtaposes seven recent evaluative developed by academics, address question new innovations. The concludes that there many overlaps between different terms criteria with mix traditional participatory norms at play. Furthermore, it also ways reflect managerial search accountability mechanisms public sector.
