Evaluating query languages and systems for high-energy physics data

چکیده
In the domain of high-energy physics (HEP), query languages in general and SQL particular have found limited acceptance. This is surprising since HEP data analysis matches model well: fully structured queried using mostly standard operators. To gain insights on why this case, we perform a comprehensive six diverse, general-purpose processing platforms an benchmark. The result evaluation interesting rather complex picture existing solutions: Their vary greatly how natural concise patterns can be expressed. Furthermore, most them are also between one two orders magnitude slower than domain-specific system used by particle physicists today. These observations suggest that, while database systems their principle viable tools for HEP, significant work remains to make relevant researchers.

Representation and Query Languages for Semistructured Data
During the past few years, research into representation of knowledge in a semi-structured format has taken an enormous flight. This document presents an overview of a couple of the most promising approaches in this field, such as XML and RDF. We also investigate the current research into query languages tailored to semi-structured data, by first examining what properties such a language should ...
متن کاملReclustering of High Energy Physics Data
The coming high-energy physics experiments will store Petabytes of data into object databases. Analysis jobs will frequently traverse collections containing millions of stored objects. Clustering is one of the most effective means to enhance the performance of these applications. This paper presents a reclustering algorithm for independent objects contained in multiple possibly overlapping coll...
متن کاملData Preservation in High Energy Physics
Data from high-energy physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. At the same time, HEP has no coherent strategy for data preservation and re-use. An inter-experimental Study Group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened at the end of 2008 and held two workshops, at DESY Large data sets accumulated during many y...
متن کاملData Preservation in High Energy Physics
Data from high-energy physics experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. However, until recently no coherent strategy existed for data preservation and re-use, and many important and complex data sets have simply been lost. While the current focus is on the LHC at CERN, in the current period several important and unique experimental programs at ...
متن کاملData Unfolding Methods in High Energy Physics
A selection of unfolding methods commonly used in High Energy Physics is compared. The methods discussed here are: bin-by-bin correction factors, matrix inversion, template fit, Tikhonov regularisation and two examples of iterative methods. Two procedures to choose the strength of the regularisation are tested, namely the L-curve scan and a scan of global correlation coefficients. The advantage...
