The Parties to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement agreed act on basis of equity protect climate system. Equitable effort sharing is an irreducibly normative matter, yet some influential studies have sought create quantitative indicators equitable that claim be value-neutral (despite evident biases). Many these fail clarify ethical principles underlying their indicators, mislabel approaches favour wealthy nations as ‘equity approaches’ combine contradictory into composites we call derivative benchmarks. This Perspective reviews effort-sharing assessments presents guidelines for developing adjudicating policy-relevant (but not ethically neutral) research. Contributions mitigate change should under Agreement, researchers take sharply diverging assessing national effort. evaluates literature policy-relevant—and explicit—research equity.
