Estimating Tropical Cyclone Vulnerability: A Review of Different Open-Source Approaches

چکیده
Abstract Tropical cyclone (TC) risk assessments are critical for disaster preparedness and response. Alongside hazard exposure, accurate TC assessment requires understanding the vulnerability of populations assets. In this chapter, we examine multiple methods that have been used to assess quantify with a focus on open-source methods. We separately discuss structural, economic, social (or demographic) approaches. Structural assesses susceptibility buildings be affected by their exposure hazards; in section, provide detailed overview how FEMA’s Hazus model quantifies damages utilizing engineering principles. Economic employs regression analysis relate wind speeds damages; discussion explores typical functional forms represent such efforts constrain parameters these functions. Finally, approaches use demographic data characterize varying risk; some representative examples methodology. conclude comparative three classes methods, suggest directions future work, ask whether different can combined yield more holistic view both human structural aspects vulnerability.

Tropical cyclone track forecasting techniques: A review
Delivering accurate cyclone forecasts in time is of key importance when it comes to saving human lives and reducing economic loss. Difficulties arise because the geographical and climatological characteristics of the various cyclone formation basins are not similar, which entails that a single forecasting technique cannot yield reliable performance in all ocean basins. For this reason, global f...
متن کاملEstimating Tropical Cyclone Intensity from Infrared Image Data
This paper describes results from a near-real-time objective technique for estimating the intensity of tropical cyclones from satellite infrared imagery in the North Atlantic Ocean basin. The technique quantifies the level of organization or axisymmetry of the infrared cloud signature of a tropical cyclone as an indirect measurement of its maximum wind speed. The final maximum wind speed calcul...
متن کاملPredicting Tropical Cyclone Genesis
The long-term goal of this project is to provide probabilistic genesis forecast guidance to operational forecasters and develop a genesis index to provide guidance for operational dynamical model prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Once regions of high TC genesis probability are identified, a movable, multi-nested version of the COAMPS with resolution of roughly 3 km or less in the inn...
متن کاملDynamics and Thermodynamics Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Haiyan
Tropical cyclone Haiyan (TCH) that formed over the West Pacific Ocean during 3-11 November 2013 has been investigated using three datasets produced by Japan Meteorology Agency, ECMWF and NCEP. Strength of TCH has been studied using two synoptic parameters of 10-m wind velocity and mean sea level pressure (MSLP). Following, three dynamic parameters including vertical wind shear (VWSH) vector, he...
