Estimating the Associations between Big Five Personality Traits, Testosterone, and Cortisol

Hormones are often conceptualized as biological markers of individual differences and have been associated with a variety behavioral indicators characteristics, such mating behavior or acquiring maintaining dominance. However, before researchers create strong theoretical models for how hormones modulate social behavior, information on dominant personality is needed. Although there some studies attempting to quantify the associations between traits, testosterone, cortisol, many inconsistencies across these studies. In this registered report, we examined Big Five traits. We aggregated 25 separate samples yield single sample 3964 (50.3% women; 27.7% women were hormonal contraceptives). Participants completed measures provided saliva testosterone cortisol assays. The results from multi-level meta-analyses revealed mostly weak, non-significant few significant effects still very small in magnitude (e.g., conscientiousness: r = −0.05). A series moderation tests that hormone-personality similar men women, those using contraceptives not, regardless interaction (i.e., variant dual-hormone hypothesis). Altogether, did not detect robust traits cortisol. findings discussed context utility examining heterogeneity associations.
