Estimates of spectral wave attenuation in Antarctic sea ice, using model/data inversion

چکیده
A model-data inversion is applied to an extensive observational dataset collected in the Southern Ocean north of Ross Sea during late autumn early winter, producing estimates frequency-dependent rate dissipation by sea ice. The modeling platform WAVEWATCH III® which accounts for non-stationarity, advection, wave generation, and other relevant processes. resulting 9477 profiles are co-located with variables such as ice thickness quantify correlations might be exploited later studies improve predictions. An average from cases thinner near edge fitted a simple binomial. binomial shows remarkable qualitative similarity prior observation-based dissipation, power dependence consistent at least three theoretical models, one assumes that dominated turbulence generated shear ice-water interface. Estimated lower closer edge, where thinner, waveheight larger. quantified correlation may develop new parametric predictions dissipation.

Snow on Antarctic Sea Ice
Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...
متن کاملProteorhodopsin-bearing bacteria in Antarctic sea ice.
Proteorhodopsins (PRs) are widespread bacterial integral membrane proteins that function as light-driven proton pumps. Antarctic sea ice supports a complex community of autotrophic algae, heterotrophic bacteria, viruses, and protists that are an important food source for higher trophic levels in ice-covered regions of the Southern Ocean. Here, we present the first report of PR-bearing bacteria,...
متن کاملRecent changes in Antarctic Sea Ice.
In contrast to the Arctic, total sea ice extent (SIE) across the Southern Ocean has increased since the late 1970s, with the annual mean increasing at a rate of 186×10(3) km(2) per decade (1.5% per decade; p<0.01) for 1979-2013. However, this overall increase masks larger regional variations, most notably an increase (decrease) over the Ross (Amundsen-Bellingshausen) Sea. Sea ice variability re...
متن کاملBacteria-algae relationships in Antarctic sea ice
Energy transfer in microbial food webs is partly quantified by the relationship between bacterial and algal biomass. Tight spatial relationships suggest active bacterial assimilation of dissolved photosynthate in temperate marine and fresh waters. However, studies in the Antarctic suggest that bacterial biomass generation from algal-derived dissolved organic matter is highly variable across sea...
متن کاملIterative Estimation of Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Using SeaWinds Data
Polar sea ice extent is an important input to global climate models and is considered to be a sensitive indicator of climate change. An algorithm has previously been developed for sea ice extent detection using data from the NASA scatterometer (NSCAT). This paper discusses the extension of that algorithm to data from SeaWinds on QuikSCAT. Due to differences in the two instruments, several modif...
