Escaping solitons from a trapping potential.

Solitons propagating within a confining potential undergo momentum-dependent scattering and eventually escape for large excitations. We experimentally highlight this phenomenon in the presence of a nonperturbative nonlinear response using self-confined light beams in a reorientational medium.

Escaping from the Box

This paper presents a solution to the problem of the creation of new terms by suggesting that representations can come from the environment, and that through experience an agent discovers which representations are useful. If suitable feature building mechanisms are built into a system then it can build a large number of features of an object in the environment, many of which may be redundant. T...

Escaping from cycles through a glass transition.

A random walk is performed over a disordered media composed of N sites random and uniformly distributed inside a d-dimensional hypercube. The walker cannot remain in the same site and hops to one of its n neighboring sites with a transition probability that depends on the distance D between sites according to a cost function E(D). The stochasticity level is parametrized by a formal temperature ...

Deflection and trapping of spatial solitons in linear photonic potentials.

We investigate the dynamics of spatial optical solitons launched in a medium with a finite perturbation of the refractive index. For longitudinally short perturbations of super-Gaussian transverse profile, as the input power varies we observe a transition from a wave-like behavior where solitons break up into multiple fringes to a particle-like behavior where solitons acquire a transverse veloc...

Electron Trapping by solitons: Classical versus Quantum Mechanical Approach

In two previous letters [Velarde et al., 2005, 2006] a new form of electric conduction mediated by solitons was shown to be possible in an anharmonic one-dimensional (1D) lattice. In the first, a strictly classical approach was adopted hence treating the lattice dynamics classically and the electron-(ion) lattice interaction with classical electrodynamics. In the second, the electron-lattice in...
