Erosion around a large-scale topographic high in a semi-arid sedimentary basin: Interactions between fluvial erosion, aeolian erosion and aeolian transport

چکیده

Large-scale aeolian erosion features such as pans usually develop upon a relatively homogeneous erodible sedimentary rock substratum and show simple concave morphologies. However, some erosional depressions in semi-arid to arid settings more complex geological contexts, associating basins outcrops of non-erodible basement. In basins, the geomorphic evolution is controlled by interplay between processes fluvial deposition (especially finer sediment fraction ephemeral lakes) deflation. The occurrence basement within region overall deflation complicates drainage systems wind-flow patterns. Both are liable evolve rapidly through time their interactions remain poorly understood. this study, we use detailed geomorphological analysis, including mapping sand-motion direction 16,300 km2 Tsagaan Els depression (Gobi Desert, Mongolia) well situ-produced cosmogenic 10Be 26Al based quantitative constraints, propose conceptual model for morphologic geologically basins. Modeling aeolian erosion in presence of vegetation

Semiarid landscapes are characterized by vegetated surfaces. Understanding the impact of vegetation on aeolian soil erosion is important for reducing soil erosion or limiting crop damage through abrasion or burial. In the present study, a saltation model fully coupled with a large-eddy simulation airflow model is extended to vegetated landscapes. From this model, the sensitivity of sand erosion...

Toward a more holistic perspective of soil erosion: Why aeolian research needs to explicitly consider fluvial processes and interactions

Soil erosion is driven by not only aeolian but also fluvial transport processes, yet these two types of processes are usually studied independently, thereby precluding effective assessment of overall erosion, potential interactions between the two drivers, and their relative sensitivities to projected changes in climate and land use. Here we provide a perspective that aeolian and fluvial transp...

Large Scale Terrain Generation from Tectonic Uplift and Fluvial Erosion

At large scale, landscapes result from the combination of two major processes: tectonics which generate the main relief through crust uplift, and weather which accounts for erosion. This paper presents the first method in computer graphics that combines uplift and hydraulic erosion to generate visually plausible terrains. Given a user-painted uplift map, we generate a stream graph over the enti...

Land degradation in drylands: Interactions among hydrologic–aeolian erosion and vegetation dynamics

a r t i c l e i n f o Land degradation in drylands is one of the major environmental issues of the 21st century particularly due to its impact on world food security and environmental quality. Climate change, shifts in vegetation composition, accelerated soil erosion processes, and disturbances have rendered these landscapes susceptible to rapid degradation that has important feedbacks on regio...

Wind and Water Erosion in Semi-arid Ecosystems

Soil erosion is an important process in dryland ecosystems, yet measurements and comparisons of wind and water erosion within and among such ecosystems are lacking. Here we compare wind erosion and transport field measurements with water erosion and transport from rainfall-simulation for three different semi-arid ecosystems: a shrubland near Carlsbad, New Mexico; a grassland near Denver, Colora...
