Distortion functions and the membership problem for submonoids of groups and monoids

The notion of upper distortion for graded submonoids embedded in groups and monoids is introduced. A finitely generated monoid M is graded if every element of M can be written in only finitely many ways in terms of some fixed system of generators. Examples of such monoids are free monoids, Artin monoids, and monoids satisfying certain small cancellation conditions. Whenever such a monoid is emb...

Upper set monoids and length preserving morphisms

Length preserving morphisms and inverse of substitutions are two wellstudied operations on regular languages. Their connection with varieties generated by power monoids was established independently by Reutenauer and Straubing in 1979. More recently, an ordered version of this theory was proposed by Polák and by the authors. In this paper, we present an improved version of these results and obt...

Unambiguous Erasing Morphisms in Free Monoids

[FRS06] characterises strings with an unambiguous image of an nonerasing morphism. Only few results are known when regarding all (possibly erasing) morphisms.

Monoids and Groups

1 is unique (1 = 11 = 1, so any left identity equals any right identity). A morphism takes 1 to the identity of φX (since φ(x) = φ(1x) = φ(1)φ(x)), but φ(1) = 1 is an extra property that ought to be satisfied by morphisms; its kernel is the sub-algebra φ(1); zero object is { 1 }; not Cartesian-closed (the terminal and initial objects are the same, yet not all groups are isomorphic). A quasi-gro...

Foldings, Graphs of Groups and the Membership Problem

We introduce a combinatorial version of Stallings-Bestvina-Feighn-Dunwoody folding sequences. We then show how they are useful in analyzing the solvability of the uniform subgroup membership problem for fundamental groups of graphs of groups. Applications include coherent right-angled Artin groups and coherent solvable groups.
