Epidemiology of pediatric trauma in the Kingdom of Bahrain: a national pediatric trauma registry pilot study

Abstract Background A pediatric trauma registry for the Kingdom of Bahrain would be a novel public health tool Bahraini system. The aim this study was to explore epidemiology at national level by describing distribution injury in Kingdom, and quantifying burden shouldered population. Methods This multicenter observational cross-sectional conducted using data from Pediatric Trauma Registry (PTR), which short-term paper-based prospective that collected over three-month period 2018. PTR based emergency departments (ED) three referral hospitals Kingdom. By simultaneously collecting all country, it assumed during collection major patients country captured study, provide estimates trauma. Inclusion criteria any individual under age 14, arrived ED seeking care intentional unintentional injuries. Results total 1328 were included study. Sixty-nine percent treated discharged ED, 30.5% admitted hospital, surgery, or seen specialist, 0.5% declared deceased. percentage documented as unrestrained Motor Vehicle Collisions (MVC) 92.3%, amongst those involved MVC, 12% ejected cabin vehicle. Conclusions There are significant implications holds policy implementation practice surrounding prevention Bahrain. Low seatbelt utilization high proportion ejection MVC victims warrant immediate implementation, including enforcement seat belt laws, strengthening traffic court system, awareness campaigns prevention.
