Environmental degradation of cellulose under anaerobic conditions

چکیده
Cellulose is a primary structural component of plants and one the most abundant polymers on Earth. Degradation this recalcitrant plant biomass an important process in global carbon cycle can potentially provide feedstock for biofuels. Fungi bacteria are organisms able to breakdown biomass-derived cellulose. Anaerobic bacteria, present cellulose degrading ecosystems, such as compost piles, soils rich organic matter, aquatic sediments, digestive systems herbivores, have developed efficient pathways maximize metabolic energy from degradation. In absence terminal electron acceptors, oxygen, hydrogen-producing common methods carrier recycling. Electron bifurcating linked hydrogen metabolism play role anaerobic metabolism. study, samples environmental cellulose-degrading microbial communities were collected, products produced during degradation examined. Samples different environments fermentation cellulose, suggesting flexibility fermentative pathways. The observed included hydrogen, acetate, propionate, butyrate, ethanol, methane.

Cellulose degradation in anaerobic environments.
In anaerobic environments rich in decaying plant material, the decomposition of cellulose is brought about by complex communities of interacting microorganisms. Because the substrate, cellulose, is insoluble, bacterial and fungal degradation occurs exocellularly, either in association with the outer cell envelope layer or extracellularly. Products of cellulose hydrolysis are available as carbon...

متن کاملAnaerobic Degradation of Hexadecan-2-one by a Microbial Enrichment Culture under Sulfate-Reducing Conditions.
A microbial enrichment culture from marine sediment was able to grow on hexadecan-2-one as the sole source of carbon and energy under sulfate-reducing conditions. Oxidation of the ketone involved carboxylation reactions and was coupled to sulfide production. This enrichment culture also grew on 6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one.
