Environmental assessment of warm mix asphalt incorporating steel slag and high reclaimed asphalt for wearing courses: a case study

نویسندگان

چکیده

This study quantifies the potential environmental benefits associated with incorporation of industrial by-products and recycled materials combined warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives in wearing course mixtures for pavement construction. An electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slag-based three incorporating slag fractionated reclaimed (RA) varying contents (i.e. 25, 40, 50%) were analyzed comparatively to reference hot (HMA) using ‘cradle-to-gate’ approach. The results this indicated that mixture 50% RA is most environmentally friendly alternative. greatest result from use asphalt, which attributed lesser demands raw material extraction, bitumen production, resource supply. On contrary, contribution lowering mixtures’ production temperature by 30°C minimal.

In addition to lower emissions warm mix asphalt has several advantages over hot mix asphalt such as fuel energy savings, decreased binder aging and an extended paving season (Photo courtesy: Matthew Corrigan, FHWA) The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) is evaluating warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies. WMA technology allows the mixing, lay down, and compaction of asphalt mixes at si...

Steel Slag Utilization in Asphalt Mixes

Steel slags are the major byproduct from the conversion of iron to steel in the basic oxygen (major type), electric arc and open hearth (minor type) steelmaking processes. Steel recovery from the slag results in a processed aggregate with both positive (wear resistant, skid resistant, rough textured, angular, well graded, stripping resistant) and negative (heavy, expansive) features. Considerab...

Laboratory Evaluation and Pavement Design for Warm Mix Asphalt

For many years, the asphalt industry has been aware of the energy savings and environmental benefits inherent in cold mix or warm mix asphalt technologies. Environmental awareness and the need for improved energy efficiency has increased rapidly over the past few years and extensive measures such as the air pollution reduction targets set by the European Union under the Kyoto Protocol have enco...

Effects of Warm-mix Asphalt Additives on Asphalt Mixture Characteristics and Pavement Performance

The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of several WMA mixtures as potential asphalt paving mixtures for Nebraska pavements. To that end, three well-known WMA additives (i.e., Sasobit, Evotherm, and Advera synthetic zeolite) were evaluated. For a more realistic evaluation of the WMA approaches, trial pavement sections of the WMA mixtures and their HMA counterparts ...

Utilization of Recycled Asphalt Concrete with Warm Mix Asphalt and Cost-Benefit Analysis

The asphalt paving industries are faced with two major problems. These two important challenges are generated with an increase in demand for environmentally friendly paving mixtures and the problem of rapidly rising raw materials. Recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is a critical necessity to save precious aggregates and reduce the use of costly bitumen. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technol...
