Environmental and biological factors are joint drivers of mercury biomagnification in subarctic lake food webs along a climate and productivity gradient

چکیده
Subarctic lakes are getting warmer and more productive due to the joint effects of climate change intensive land-use practices (e.g. forest clear-cutting peatland ditching), processes that potentially increase leaching peat- soil-stored mercury into lake ecosystems. We sampled biotic communities from primary producers (algae) top consumers (piscivorous fish), in 19 subarctic situated on a latitudinal (69.0–66.5° N), climatic (+3.2 °C temperature +30% precipitation north south) catchment (pristine forestry areas) gradient. first tested how productivity influence biomagnification food webs focusing trophic magnification slope (TMS) baseline (THg baseline) level, both derived linear regression between total (log10THg) organism level (TL). examined suite environmental variables thought explain THg TMS with stepwise generalized multiple models. Finally, we assessed affect content predators lakes. found all studied lakes, but variable values. In models, was best explained by negative relationships chain length, climate-productivity gradient, properties, elemental C:N ratio predator (full model R2 = 0.90, p < 0.001). The examining variation values included same positive (R2 0.69, 0.014). Mass-standardized common (1 kg northern pike, Esox lucius) increased towards Results indicate increasing eutrophication via forestry-related activities levels at base web predators, suggesting sources nutrients should be considered future bioaccumulation studies.

Invasibility of plankton food webs along a trophic state gradient
Biological invasions are becoming more common, yet the majority of introduced exotic species fail to establish viable populations in new environments. Current ecological research suggests that invasion success may be determined by properties of the native ecosystem, such as the supply rate of limiting nutrients (i.e. trophic state). We examined how trophic state influences invasion success by i...
متن کاملTrophic transfer of metals along freshwater food webs: Evidence of cadmium biomagnification in nature
We conducted a study with cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) in the delta of San Francisco Bay, using nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes to identify trophic position and food web structure. Cadmium is progressively enriched among trophic levels in discrete epiphyte-based food webs composed of macrophyte-dwelling invertebrates (the first link being epiphytic algae) and fishes (the first link being go...
متن کاملRelative importance of CO2 recycling and CH4 pathways in lake food webs along a dissolved organic carbon gradient
Terrestrial ecosystems export large quantities of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to aquatic ecosystems. This DOC can serve as a resource for heterotrophic bacteria and influence whether lakes function as sources or sinks of atmospheric CO2. However, it remains unclear as to how terrestrial carbon moves through lake food webs. We addressed this topic by conducting a comparative lake survey in th...
متن کاملInteraction Milieu Explains Performance of Species in Simple Food Webs along an Environmental Gradient
Species interact with each other in a complex network of relationships that can be modeled as an interaction milieu, i.e. a biotic background with which the species interacts. The interaction milieu is given by the frequency distribution of traits that are important to a given interaction; hence this approach provides a direct link between organism performance, abiotic environmental conditions ...
متن کاملMercury Biomagnification between Two Trophic Levels of a Grazing Food Chain (Plankton and Planktivorous Fish) in a Fresh Water Ecosystem
Background: The Present study was carried out to track and calculate Biomagnification Factor (BMF) of total mercury (T-Hg) between two different trophic levels (i.e., plankton and a planktivorous fish) in a fresh water grazing food chain. Methods: Experimental organisms were planktonic biomass and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) as a planktivorous fish. Silver carp samples were obt...
