Ensuring sustainability of community participation in locally-managed marine protected area in north-western Cagayan, Philippines

The establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) by the local or national government is a popular conservation tool in Philippines. Participation among community members an important consideration for success its implementation. While remarkable involvement observed during planning and MPAs, sustaining this voluntary participation challenge implementation stage. To ensure sustainability participation, paper investigates socio-economic conditions factors that influence villagers using probit model taking case locally-managed MPA north-western Cagayan, results study showed affected demographic (income, age, gender, household size), fishing characteristics (gears boat ownership), presence incentives (livelihood projects payao), manifestation leadership (village leaders). findings could be used to increase tendency participate management instituting policies geared towards their involvement.
