Enhanced syntrophic propionate degradation and methane production by granular activated carbon in AnSBR

چکیده
Syntrophic degradation of propionate has been regarded as a limiting factor for methane formation in anaerobic digestion (AD) processes, due to its easier production but harder than other volatile fatty acids. In the present study, 20 g/L granular activated carbon (GAC) was introduced into an sequence batch reactor (AnSBR) and enhancement evaluated with another AnSBR without GAC control. Inoculated same excess sludge, both AnSBRs were synchronously started up at 35 °C fed increased gradually from initial 340 mg/L final 1700 mg/L. The results showed that introduction made get steady state 6 days earlier. With about state, average specific biomass enhanced 0.20 0.25 L/L·d, 7.72 to7.96 g/L, respectively, by GAC. suggested had functioned stimulating microbial growth enhancing direct interspecies electron transfer between hydrogen-producing acetogens methanogens, which resulted production.

Experimental and Theoretical Study on the CH4 Adsorption by Granular and Microporous Activated Carbon
Adsorbed natural gas (ANG) by Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) has been widely investigated as an alternative to CNG and LNG technologies for storage and transportation of natural gas. In the present work, a theoretical and experimental study was conducted to accurately determine the amount of adsorption of CH4 by GAC. To carry out the experiments, the volumetric method was used up to 4 MPa at c...

In this study, the capability of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) to adsorb glucose and maltose were experimentally examined. Commercial GAC (mesh 12-20), supplied by Sigma Aldrich company in...
متن کاملResponse of methane production via propionate oxidation to carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes in paddy soil enrichments
Carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) have become a growing concern in terms of their fate and toxicity in aqueous environments. Methane (CH4) is a major product of organic matter degradation in waterlogged environments. In this study, we determined the effect of MWCNTs-COOH on the production of CH4 from propionate oxidation in paddy soil enrichments. The results showed that t...
متن کاملSyntrophic propionate degradation response to temperature decrease and microbial community shift in an UASB reactor.
Propionate is an important intermediate product during the methane fermentation of organic matter, and its degradation is crucial for maintaining the performance of an anaerobic digester. In order to understand the effect of temperature on propionate degradation, an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor with synthetic wastewater containing propionate as a sole carbon source was introdu...
