Enhanced nonlinear optics in photonic-crystal microcavities.

Focus Serial: Frontiers of Nonlinear Optics Nonlinear photonic-crystal microresonators offer unique fundamental ways of enhancing a variety of nonlinear optical processes. This enhancement improves the performance of nonlinear optical devices to such an extent that their corresponding operation powers and switching times are suita...

Nonlinear Optics in Porous Silicon Photonic Crystals and Microcavities

This paper is a survey of our recently published and new results on nonlinear-optical studies of photonic band-gap (PBG) structures formed from mesoporous silicon. The studies are performed on photonic crystals, high-quality-factor microcavities (MC) with a half-wavelength-thick microcavity spacer, and on series of coupled microcavities with two identical microcavity spacers and controllable co...

Magnetic imaging in photonic crystal microcavities.

We demonstrate the nonresonant magnetic interaction at optical frequencies between a photonic crystal microcavity and a metallized near-field microscopy probe. This interaction can be used to map and control the magnetic component of the microcavity modes. The metal coated tip acts as a microscopic conductive ring, which induces a magnetic response opposite to the inducing magnetic field. The r...

Optically tunable silicon photonic crystal microcavities.

We demonstrate the use of silicon photonic crystal based microcavity structures to perform light modulation at potentially giga-Hertz speeds through the use of optically induced plasma dispersion. The cavity configurations considered have the potential to operate at low pump power when the Q of the cavity involved is maximized.

Enhanced Photoluminescence from Embedded PbSe Colloidal Quantum Dots in Silicon-Based Random Photonic Crystal Microcavities

The experimental observation of enhanced photoluminescence from high-Q silicon-based random photonic crystal microcavities embedded with PbSe colloidal quantum dots is being reported. The emission is optically excited at room temperature by a continuous-wave Ti-sapphire laser and exhibits randomly distributed localized modes with a minimum spectral linewidth of 4 nm at 1.5 μm wavelength.
