چکیده
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is widely used as a gasoline additive with toxicity and carcinogenicity, has caused environmental pollution worldwide. Biodegradation promising method for the removal of MTBE from contaminated sites. In this paper, three strains high adaptability different degrading characteristics to were cultured. The kinetic models established systematically simulate biodegradation by various at concentrations. Moreover, in synergistic system containing mixture pure was studied. mixed consortium enhanced concentrations (30–50 mg/L), degradation efficiency increased about 20% compared concentration 30 mg/L. Further, degraded nearly times faster than any individual, indicating that co-cultures cultures improved both rate biodegradation. addition, it found effectively removed presence other components, exhibited stronger adaptability, especially low or temperatures. This study supports cultivation remediate MTBE-contaminated environments, either single substrate environments components.

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degradation by a microbial consortium.
The widespread use of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) as a gasoline additive has resulted in a large number of cases of groundwater contamination. Bioremediation is often proposed as the most promising alternative after treatment. However, MTBE biodegradation appears to be quite different from the biodegradation of usual gasoline contaminants such as benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene (B...
متن کاملDegradation and Removal of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has been used in many countries as an octaneenhancing replacement for lead, primarily in midand high-grade gasoline. The prevalent use of MTBE has led to its introduction into environment. MTBE is poorly adsorbed, biologically and chemically stable, making it very persistent in the environment. MTBE has been classified as a possible human carcinogen. Many studies ...
متن کاملRapid Biodegradation of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) by Pure Bacterial Cultures
Two pure bacterial strains capable of rapid degrading methyl tert–butyl ether (MTBE) were isolated from an industrial wastewater treatment plant, identified and characterized. These strains are able to grow on MTBE as the sole carbon and energy sources and completely mineralize it to the biomass and carbon dioxide. The strains were identified as Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella terrigena. Bot...
متن کاملMethyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) bioremediation studies
The massive production of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), a primary constituent of reformulated gasoline, combined with its mobility, persistence and toxicity, makes it an important pollutant. It was considered recalcitrant until a few years ago, but recently MTBE biodegradation in aerobic conditions has been demonstrated with both mixed and pure cultures. Mixed cultures are generally the more ...
متن کاملremoval of methyl tert-butyl ether (mtbe) from contaminated water by photocatalytic process
background: methyl tert -butyl ether (mtbe) has been commercially used as an octane enhancer to replace tetraethyl lead in gasoline since 1979. the high mobility, water solubility, and resistance to natural attenuation associated with mtbe may result in contamination of ground and surface waters. in this investigation the degradation of aqueous mtbe at relatively high concentrations was studie...
