Engineering Antioxidant Surfaces for Titanium-Based Metallic Biomaterials

Prolonged inflammation induced by orthopedic metallic implants can critically affect the success rates, which even lead to aseptic loosening and consequent implant failure. In case of adverse clinical conditions involving osteoporosis, trauma corrosion-wear in peri-implant region, reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity is enhanced leads increased oxidative stress. Metallic materials (such as titanium its alloys) induce amount ROS, thereby influencing healing process. This will consequently bone remodeling process increase time. The current review explores ROS generation aspects associated with Ti-based biomaterials various surface modification strategies developed specifically improve antioxidant Ti surfaces. initial part this metabolism resulting formation superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical hydrogen peroxide radicals. followed a comprehensive overview organic inorganic coatings/materials for effective surfaces outlook research direction. Overall, highlights critical need consider well stress while designing an material engineering.
