Energy dissipation in synchronous binary asteroids

چکیده
Synchronous binary asteroids can experience libration about their tidally-locked equilibrium, which will result in energy dissipation. This is an important topic to the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment, where excitation caused by DART kinetic impact Didymos asteroid system may be reduced through dissipation before Hera arrives survey effects of impact. We develop a numeric model for explore how different configurations affect rate find tumbling within synchronous state eliminates systematic trend damping on short timescales (several years), but not over long times (hundreds years) depending material conditions. Furthermore, libration, eccentricity, fluctuations semimajor axis are primarily dependent stiffness secondary, whereas secular expansion dictated primary, as expected. Systems experiencing stable planar secondary see noticeable reduction amplitude after only few years thus should considered during Hera’s Didymos. For very dissipative undergoing able calculate Dimorphos therefore constrain its tidal parameters.

Inelastic Dissipation in Wobbling Asteroids and Comets
Asteroids and comets dissipate energy when they rotate about any axis different from the axis of the maximal moment of inertia. We show that the most efficient internal relaxation happens at twice the frequency of the body’s precession. Therefore earlier estimates that ignore the double frequency input underestimate the internal relaxation in asteroids and comets. We suggest that the Earth’s se...

متن کاملEnergy dissipation and error probability in fault-tolerant binary switching
The potential energy profile of an ideal binary switch is a symmetric double well. Switching between the wells without energy dissipation requires time-modulating the height of the potential barrier separating the wells and tilting the profile towards the desired well at the precise juncture when the barrier disappears. This, however, demands perfect timing synchronization and is therefore faul...
متن کاملFraction of Contact Binary Trojan Asteroids
We present the results of an optical lightcurve survey of 114 Jovian Trojan asteroids conducted to determine the fraction of contact binaries. Sparse-sampling was used to assess the photometric range of the asteroids and those showing the largest ranges were targeted for detailed follow-up observations. This survey led to the discovery of two Trojan asteroids, (17365) and (29314) displaying lar...

Radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2000 DP107 show that it is composed of an approximately 800-meter-diameter primary and an approximately 300-meter-diameter secondary revolving around their common center of mass. The orbital period of 1.755 +/- 0.007 days and semimajor axis of 2620 +/- 160 meters constrain the total mass of the system to 4.6 +/- 0.5 x 10(11) kilograms and the bulk density of ...
