Energetic budget of diploid and triploid eastern oysters during a summer die-off

چکیده

Triploid oysters are widely used in off-bottom aquaculture of eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica. However, farmers the Gulf Mexico (GoM) and Atlantic coast estuaries have observed unresolved, late-spring die-offs triploid threatening sustainability aquaculture. To investigate this, physiological processes underlying oyster growth (e.g., feeding, respiration) mortality one-year-old diploid were compared early summer following an uptick mortality. It was predicted that higher result energetic imbalances (increased metabolic demands decreased feeding behavior). Oyster clearance rates, percentage time valves open, absorption efficiency, oxygen consumption rates (basal routine), ammonia excretion rate measured laboratory scope for calculated. In addition, their condition index, gametogenic stage, Perkinsus marinus infection level, measured. Mortality triploids greater than diploids, mirroring a related field study. The parameters measured, however, could not explain Scope growth, suggesting sufficient energy reserves, while all other measurements where similar between ploidies. remains to be determined whether caused from disruption homeostasis at cellular level.

How annual course of photoperiod shapes seasonal behavior of diploid and triploid oysters, Crassostrea gigas

In this work, we study if ploidy (i.e. number of copies of chromosomes) in the oyster Crassostrea gigas may introduce differences in behavior and in its synchronization by the annual photoperiod. To answer to the question about the effect of the seasonal course of the photoperiod on the behavior of C. gigas according to its ploidy, we quantified valve activity by HFNI valvometry in situ for 1 y...

Effects of Alexandrium minutum exposure upon physiological and hematological variables of diploid and triploid oysters, Crassostrea gigas.

The effects of an artificial bloom of the toxin-producing dinoflagellate, Alexandrium minutum, upon physiological parameters of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, were assessed. Diploid and triploid oysters were exposed to cultured A. minutum and compared to control diploid and triploid oysters fed T. Isochrysis. Experiments were repeated twice, in April and mid-May 2007, to investigate eff...

Influence of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) sexual maturation stage and ploidy on uptake of paralytic phycotoxins.

The purpose of this study was to assess paralytic phycotoxin uptake in diploid and triploid oysters at two stages of their sexual cycle corresponding to their status in early summer (June) and winter (November). Samples of diploid and triploid oysters were exposed to a toxic culture of Alexandrium minutum for 4 days in each season. No significant differences in filtration or clearance rates wer...

Effect of thermal stress on some hematological parameters of diploid and triploid Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Temperature fluctuation is one of the most common stressors during fish transportation and aquaculture condition. Triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) get more attention because of its sterility. In this study, 24 rainbow trout belong to diploid and triploid group, average weight 13±0.23 g were subjected to temperature change from 13 to 20 ºC, and kept under tension for 10 min. Before a...
