Emerging Patterns in Cultural Ecosystem Services as Incentives and Obstacles for Raptor Conservation

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment proposed four categories of ecosystem services as regulating, provisioning, supporting and cultural. Of these, cultural have been the most difficult to quantify despite playing a key role in developing society’s ecosystems. By reviewing series case studies related derived from raptors, we examine relations between tangible ‘knowledge’ ‘beliefs’ part human societies We identified types raptor regulating provisioning patterns service--knowledge-beliefs that defined positive or negative outcomes for conservation. also demonstrate how possible interactions physical, experiential, physical-symbolic representative-symbolic different stakeholders can create incentives obstacles Predictable service-knowledge-beliefs provide framework upon which socio-cultural ethnobiological aspects conservation may be combined with ecological research support initiatives. Based on these present examples might employed better promote while respecting beliefs traditions stakeholders.

Conservation Planning for Ecosystem Services

Despite increasing attention to the human dimension of conservation projects, a rigorous, systematic methodology for planning for ecosystem services has not been developed. This is in part because flows of ecosystem services remain poorly characterized at local-to-regional scales, and their protection has not generally been made a priority. We used a spatially explicit conservation planning fra...

Smart incentives in markets for conservation services

Market based instruments such as payments, auctions or tradable permits have been proposed as exible and cost-e ective instruments for biodiversity conservation on private lands. Trading the service of conservation requires to de ne a metric that determines to which extent a conserved site adds to the regional conservation objective. Yet, while markets for conservation are widely discussed and ...

Regional Patterns of Ecosystem Services in Cultural Landscapes

European agricultural landscapes have been shaped by humans to produce marketable private goods such as food, feed, fiber and timber. Land-use intensification to increase provisioning services in such productive landscapes alters the capacity of ecosystems to supply other services (often public goods and services) that are also vital for human wellbeing. However, the interactions, synergies and...

Sustaining ecosystem services in cultural landscapes

Classical conservation approaches focus on the man-made degradation of ecosystems and tend to neglect the socialecological values that human land uses have imprinted on many environments. Throughout the world, ingenious land-use practices have generated unique cultural landscapes, but these are under pressure from agricultural intensification, land abandonment, and urbanization. In recent years...

An evidence assessment tool for ecosystem services and conservation studies.

Reliability of scientific findings is important, especially if they directly impact decision making, such as in environmental management. In the 1990s, assessments of reliability in the medical field resulted in the development of evidence-based practice. Ten years later, evidence-based practice was translated into conservation, but so far no guidelines exist on how to assess the evidence of in...
