Emerging organic contaminants in karst groundwater: A global level assessment

چکیده

A quarter of the world's population uses groundwater from karst aquifers. range emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) are considered a potential threat to water resources and dependant ecosystems, aquifers most vulnerable systems anthropogenic pollution. This paper provides first global compilation (based on 50 studies) EOCs in explores EOC occurrence use understand systems. Of 144 compounds detected reviewed studies, vast majority pharmaceuticals pesticides. Maximum concentrations varied over five orders magnitude, nearly half exceed 100 ng/L. Karst is shown have lower frequency detection compared surface waters local shallow intergranular aquifers, but overall higher other major aquifer types. growing number studies demonstrated utility some legacy for quality assessment as tracers characterising They can improve understanding vulnerability, storage, attenuation mechanisms, cases been used assist with catchment delineation. research area hydrogeology, more needed contamination develop within our this critical resource.

Emerging Organic Contaminants in Groundwater

Emerging organic contaminants (ECs) are compounds now being found in groundwater from agricultural, urban sources that were previously not detectable, or thought to be significant. ECs include pesticides and degradates, pharmaceuticals, industrial compounds, personal care products, fragrances, water treatment byproducts, flame retardants and surfactants, as well as ‘life-style’ compounds such a...

Inclusion of emerging organic contaminants in groundwater monitoring plans

Groundwater is essential for human life and its protection is a goal for the European policies. All the anthropogenic activities could impact on water quality. •Conventional pollutants and more than 700 emerging pollutants, resulting from point and diffuse source contamination, threat the aquatic ecosystem.•Policy-makers and scientists will have to cooperate to create an initial groundwater eme...

Emerging organic contaminants in groundwater: A review of sources, fate and occurrence.

Emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) detected in groundwater may have adverse effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems. This paper reviews the existing occurrence data in groundwater for a range of EOCs including pharmaceutical, personal care, 'life-style' and selected industrial compounds. The main sources and pathways for organic EOCs in groundwater are reviewed, with occurrence data fo...

Global assessment of organic contaminants in farmed salmon.

The annual global production of farmed salmon has increased by a factor of 40 during the past two decades. Salmon from farms in northern Europe, North America, and Chile are now available widely year-round at relatively low prices. Salmon farms have been criticized for their ecological effects, but the potential human health risks of farmed salmon consumption have not been examined rigorously. ...

Persistent and emerging micro-organic contaminants in Chalk groundwater of England and France.

The Chalk aquifer of Northern Europe is an internationally important source of drinking water and sustains baseflow for surface water ecosystems. The areal distribution of microorganic (MO) contaminants, particularly non-regulated emerging MOs, in this aquifer is poorly understood. This study presents results from a reconnaissance survey of MOs in Chalk groundwater, including pharmaceuticals, p...
