Embryo position of Castanopsis sclerophylla (Fagaceae) seeds with recalcitrant storage behavior differs from Quercus genus but response to desiccation shows no difference

چکیده
In many but not all recalcitrant Quercus seeds, water loss during drying only occurs through the scar. Consequently, embryo axis sitting on opposite side of scar is well protected from desiccation. However, whether such a mechanism common throughout Fagaceae species unexplored. Similarly, little known about desiccation response other genera. Germination and tolerance Castanopsis sclerophylla (Lindl. & Paxton) Schottky (Fagaceae) were studied by seeds with silica gel. Fresh had moisture content (MC) 36% germinated to 92.5% when incubated at 15/20 °C. Drying 22.5% 20.7% MC decreased germination 27% 5%, respectively, indicating that are recalcitrant. X-ray computed tomography photomicrographs showed C. located just below Regardless occurring either or whole pericarp, was deemed unavoidable. Nevertheless, percentage exceptional similarities species.

Corrigendum: implications of the lack of desiccation tolerance in recalcitrant seeds
A suite of interacting processes and mechanisms enables tolerance of desiccation and storage (conservation) of orthodox seeds in the dry state. While this is a long-term option under optimized conditions, dry orthodox seeds are not immortal, with life spans having been characterized as short, intermediate and long. Factors facilitating desiccation tolerance are metabolic "switch-off" and intrac...
متن کاملProgramming desiccation-tolerance: from plants to seeds to resurrection plants.
Desiccation-tolerance (DT) evolved as the key solution to survival on land by the early algal ancestors of terrestrial plants. This 'first' DT involved utilizing rapidly mobilisable repair mechanisms and is still found today in mosses, such as Tortula ruralis, and ferns, such as Mohria caffrorum. The first seed plants lost vegetative DT while investing their seeds with tolerance mechanisms impr...
متن کاملNitric Oxide Enhances Desiccation Tolerance of Recalcitrant Antiaris toxicaria Seeds via Protein S-Nitrosylation and Carbonylation
The viability of recalcitrant seeds is lost following stress from either drying or freezing. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting from uncontrolled metabolic activity are likely responsible for seed sensitivity to drying. Nitric oxide (NO) and the ascorbate-glutathione cycle can be used for the detoxification of ROS, but their roles in the seed response to desiccation remain poorly understoo...
متن کاملLEA polypeptide profiling of recalcitrant and orthodox legume seeds reveals ABI3-regulated LEA protein abundance linked to desiccation tolerance
In contrast to orthodox seeds that acquire desiccation tolerance during maturation, recalcitrant seeds are unable to survive drying. These desiccation-sensitive seeds constitute an interesting model for comparative analysis with phylogenetically close species that are desiccation tolerant. Considering the importance of LEA (late embryogenesis abundant) proteins as protective molecules both in d...
