‘Embracing turbulent waters’: Enhancing athlete self-regulation using the ‘PoST’ framework for performance preparation at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games

Sport science has increasingly witnessed use of contemporary ecological approaches to athlete development, preparation, and skill acquisition, providing alternatives traditional pedagogical approaches. Here we examine an perspective on transferring theory into coaching practice for self-regulation performance by presenting the case example one lead coach three athletes representing Team GB in sport Canoe Slalom at 2020 Olympics Tokyo. The aims this exemplar are: (1) offer insights how dynamics rationale supported integration nonlinear pedagogy (skill) training periodisation, underpinning preparation world class competition; (2), provide a first-hand transfer support self-regulation, learning, high-performance sport. In example, ‘Periodisation Skill Training’ framework (i.e., termed ‘PoST’ framework) venue specific Tokyo was applied adapted. Principles co-design, Constraints-Led Approach, perception-action coupling representative learning design were embedded within collaborative application across team including athlete, psychologist. To conclude, facilitating is highlighted practical exemplars paddlers cope with dynamic environments canoe slalom.
