Embodied mental imagery improves memory

چکیده
According to embodied cognition theory, cognitive processes are grounded in sensory, motor, and emotional systems. This theory supports the idea that language comprehension access memory based on sensorimotor mental simulations, which does indeed explain experimental results for visual imagery. These show word memorisation is improved when individual actively simulates characteristics of object be learned. Very few studies, however, have investigated effectiveness more is, simulating both sensory motor aspects (i.e., imagery) from a first-person perspective. The recall performances 83 adults were analysed 4 different conditions: rehearsal, imagery, third-person Results revealed efficiency gradient running low-embodiment strategies involving poor perceptual and/or simulation) high-embodiment rich simulation systems involved interactions with object). However, benefit engaging as opposed purely was only observed participants adopted Surprisingly, imagery vividness seemed play negligible role this effect grounding efficiency.

28. Embodied Mental Imagery in Cognitive Robots
This chapter is focused on discussing the concept of mental imagery as a fundamental cognitive capability to enhance the performance of cognitive robots. Indeed, the emphasis will be on the embodied imagery mechanisms applied to build artificial cognitive models of motor imagery and mental simulation to control complex behaviors of humanoid platforms, which represent the artificial body. With t...
متن کاملSimulating Active Perception and Mental Imagery with Embodied Chaotic Itinerancy
We explore the understanding of conscious states in terms of spatio-temporal dynamics through modelling a mobile agent. Conscious states are associated with an agent’s spontaneous and deterministic fluctuation between attachment to and detachment from the surroundings. It is because of this fluctuating nature, we argue, that an agent can perceive structure in the world. Perception requires a co...
متن کاملMental Imagery and Visual Working Memory
Visual working memory provides an essential link between past and future events. Despite recent efforts, capacity limits, their genesis and the underlying neural structures of visual working memory remain unclear. Here we show that performance in visual working memory--but not iconic visual memory--can be predicted by the strength of mental imagery as assessed with binocular rivalry in a given ...
متن کاملElectrophysiological Potentials Reveal Cortical Mechanisms for Mental Imagery, Mental Simulation, and Grounded (Embodied) Cognition
Grounded cognition theory proposes that cognition, including meaning, is grounded in sensorimotor processing. The mechanism for grounding cognition is mental simulation, which is a type of mental imagery that re-enacts modal processing. To reveal top-down, cortical mechanisms for mental simulation of shape, event-related potentials were recorded to face and object pictures preceded by mental im...
