Embedded Coexistence: Social Adaptation of Chinese Female White-Collar Workers in Japan

In Japan, Chinese female white-collar workers have emerged as a rapidly growing social group. Unlike traditional migrants, high-skilled women exhibit more autonomy and strategy in their interactions with mainstream society. Traditional immigrant theories do not apply to patterns of adaptation. The paper draws on qualitative research 38 working Tokyo after graduating from Japanese colleges. It illustrates performance strategies adapting society explores how decision-making process is shaped. findings show that they selective adaptation: They self-identify “permanent sojourners”—they are eclectic, but inclined maintain cultural cognition ordered around homeland culture, multiple contacts across ethnic groups reserve differences interactions. Furthermore, this mode adaptation results the interaction three factors: individual rational choice, mutual pressure in-group out-group, national policies historical issues between China Japan.
