Electrospun Nanofibre Air Filters for Particles and Gaseous Pollutants

Nanofibre filters may offer new properties not available in commercial fibre filters. These include a higher surface area and the ability to novel materials within fibres. In addition small size allows potential gains performance due slip-flow phenomenon which normal gas viscosity does apply objects smaller than mean free path of gas. We tested electrospun generated from polyvinyl alcohol solutions, optionally embedded with nano-grains photocatalytic TiO2 activated charcoal. The exhibited pressure drops range 195 Pa 2693 for face velocity 5.3 cm/s removal efficiency greater 97% 12–480 nm particles. Basis weights ranged 16.6 67.6 g/m2 specific areas 1.4 17.4 m2/g. Reactivity towards volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was achieved by irradiating ultraviolet light. It is necessary solve problems connected absorbance VOCs further reduce resistance airflow order these achieve widespread use. incorporation reactive air filtration into building ventilation systems will contribute improved indoor quality.
