Electroosmosis Based Novel Treatment Approach for Cerebral Edema

نویسندگان

چکیده

Objective: Cerebral edema characterized as an abnormal accumulation of interstitial fluid has not been treated effectively. We propose a novel treatment approach to drive edematous out the brain by direct current utilizing tissue's electroosmotic property. Methods: A finite element (FE) head model is developed and employed assess feasibility approach. First, capacity for electric field prediction validated against human experiments. Second, two electrode configurations (S D-montage) are designed evaluate distribution field, flow (EOF), density, temperature across under applied current. Results: The S-montage shown induce average EOF velocity 7e-4 mm/s underneath anode voltage 15 V, D-montage induces 9e-4 5 V. Meanwhile, in both below 38 °C, which within safety range. Further, magnitude proportional direction follows from cathode. white matter significantly higher than that gray where be drawn out. Conclusion: proposed electroosmosis based allows alleviating critical time window Significance: may further new solely or complement existing conventional treatments edema.

Treatment of cerebral edema.

BACKGROUND Cerebral edema is a potentially devastating complication of various acute neurologic disorders. Its successful treatment may save lives and preserve neurologic function. REVIEW SUMMARY Different pathophysiological mechanisms are responsible for the formation of cytotoxic and vasogenic edema. Yet, these 2 types of edema often coexist and their treatment tends to overlap, with the ex...

CEREBRAL EDEMA: A RARE COMPLICATION IN GALACTOSEMIA

A 34 day-old girl infant was admitted for poor feeding and cholestasis. She had a bulging fontanelle, with no evidence of intracranial infection or hemorrhage. Investigations demonstrated that she had galactosemia. Computed tomographic scans demonstrated the presence of diffuse cerebral edema. After treatment the edema resolved.

A new scoring system for stratifying risk for cerebral edema in children suffering diabetic ketoacidosis

Background: Predicting adverse neurovascular complications due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) particularly in children leads to more appropriately management of disease as well as achievement of acceptable patients' survival. Cerebral edema is a life-threatening adverse event following DKA responsible for high mortality rate. Recently, authors have focused introducing new risk assessment tools ...

Diabetic Macular Edema: Traditional and Novel Treatment

Diabetes is one of the leading public health problems worldwide. Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of vision loss in patients with diabetes. Ideal metabolic control of diabetes is the primary goal of treatment and the basic way of preventing and stopping the progression of DME. Although laser photocoagulation has been the standard treatment of DME for nearly three decades, superior...
