چکیده
Benzalkonium chloride (BAK) is a mixture of alkyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chlorides, which used primarily as biocide, surfactant, preservative, and antimicrobial agent in the pharmaceutical industry, particular ophthalmologic nasal solutions. However, BAK may cause harmful consequences on eye structures anterior segment. Control identity content necessary by applying sensitive detection method. This study unravels use glassy carbon (GC) electrode pristine boron-doped diamond (BDD) for four homologs non-aqueous medium using square wave voltammetry (SWV). The BDD provided more reproducibility oxidation potential than GC with correlation coefficient 0.999. irreversible peak was very broad deconvoluted into 3 peaks corresponding to C12, C14, combined C16–C18 reflect their concentration ratio mixture. method then extended C12 homolog ophthalmic formulations limit (LOD) 0.4 μg/mL. estimated levels three were agreement specified values manufacturers. results validated high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) ultraviolet (UV) detection, confirming presence single (C12) drops.

MICROBIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF SOME OPHTHALMIC PREPARATIONS CONTAINING DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE
Zinc sulphate and boric acid ophthalmic preparations, containing benzalkonium chloride as preservative, have been investigated against gram-negative and positive bacteria. Viability of bacteria was found after 7 days, although it was completely suppressed after 24 hours of inoculation. Zinc sulphate generally increases the antimicrobial activity of benzalkonium chloride, whereas boric acid ...
متن کاملRemoval of benzalkonium chloride by polymeric adsorbents
Removal of benzalkonium chloride (BKC) from aqueous streams by polymeric resins XAD-7 and XAD-16 was investigated. Adsorption equilibrium isotherms of BKC from water were measured in a batch adsorber at different temperatures and ionic strengths of the external phase. In addition, the influence of an organic solvent (ethanol) on the phase equilibrium was studied. The experimental data was corre...

Benzalkonium chloride (as Roccal or Zephiran) was found to inactivate influenza, measles, canine distemper, rabies, fowl laryngotracheitis, vaccinia, Semliki Forest, feline pneumonitis, meningopneumonitis, and herpes simplex viruses after 10 min of exposure at 30 C or at room temperature. Poliovirus and encephalomyocarditis virus were not inactivated under the same conditions. It was concluded ...
متن کاملEffect of benzalkonium chloride-free latanoprost ophthalmic solution on ocular surface in patients with glaucoma
INTRODUCTION Benzalkonium chloride (BAK), included as a preservative in many topical treatments for glaucoma, induces significant toxicity and alters tear breakup time (TBUT). BAK-containing latanoprost, an ester prodrug of prostaglandin F2α, can cause ocular adverse events (AEs) associated with BAK. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BAK-free latanoprost. PA...

Article history: Received on: 29/02/2016 Revised on: 15/03/2016 Accepted on: 06/04/2016 Available online: 28/05/2016 A simple HPLC method for determination of Benzalkonium chloride in various ophthalmic solutions was developed. The chromatographic analysis was achieved using CN column (250 mm, 4.6 mm i.d., 5 μm) with isocratic mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile phosphate buffer (pH 5.5; 0....
