Electro-optical nanotraps for neutral atoms.
We propose a new class of nanoscale electro-optical traps for neutral atoms. A prototype is the toroidal trap created by a suspended, charged carbon nanotube decorated with a silver nanosphere dimer. An illuminating laser field, blue detuned from an atomic resonance frequency, is strongly focused by plasmons induced in the dimer and generates both a repulsive potential barrier near the nanostru...
متن کاملOptical control of single neutral atoms
This thesis presents experiments concerning the preparation and manipulation of single neutral atoms in optical traps. The experimental setup as well as the properties of the optical dipole trap are described. The long term goal of this experiment is to use trapped atoms as information carriers in quantum information processing. The examination and control of all trapping parameters and heating...
متن کاملAn all optical dynamical dark trap for neutral atoms.
We describe the experimental realization of a dynamical optical trap for atoms: the Rotating Off-resonant Dipole Optical (RODiO) Trap. A blue detuned circularly scanned laser beam creates a time averaged ;;box" for the atoms. We characterized this novel confinement technique by varying the trapping geometry and the laser beam parameters. Our observations agree well with a numerical model.
متن کاملAn optical conveyor belt for single neutral atoms
Using optical dipole forces we have realized controlled transport of a single or any desired small number of neutral atoms over a distance of a centimeter with sub-micrometer precision. A standing wave dipole trap is loaded with a prescribed number of cesium atoms from a magneto-optical trap. Mutual detuning of the counterpropagating laser beams moves the interference pattern, allowing us to ac...
متن کاملCoherent cold collisions with neutral atoms in optical lattices.
By loading a Bose-Einstein condensate into a three-dimensional optical lattice potential, we have been able to demonstrate several fundamental aspects of coherent cold collisions between neutral atoms. We show experimentally how such collisions lead to a well-defined phase shift in the corresponding many-body wave function. The experimental realization of such interactions can be fundamental fo...
