Electro-optic modulation in integrated photonics

Electro-optic modulators are an indispensable part of photonic communication systems, largely dictating the achievable transmission rate. Recent advances in materials and fabrication/processing techniques have brought new elements a renewed dynamic to research on optical modulation. Motivated by opportunities, this Perspective reviews state art integrated electro-optic modulators, covering broad range contemporary platforms. To provide better overview status current assessment different material platforms is conducted basis common performance metrics: extinction ratio, insertion loss, bandwidth, driving voltage, footprint. The main physical phenomena exploited for modulation first introduced, aiming self-contained reference researchers physics engineering. Additionally, we take care highlight topics that can be overlooked require attention, such as accurate calculation carrier density distribution energy consumption, correct modeling thin two-dimensional materials, nature contact electrodes. Finally, future outlook provided, anticipating trends years come.

We present a dynamical analysis of lossless intensity modulation in two different ring resonator geometries. In both geometries, we demonstrate modulation schemes that result in a symmetrical output with an infinite on/off ratio. The systems behave as lossless intensity modulators where the time-averaged output optical power is equal to the time-averaged input optical power.

We use the Stokes photon of a biphoton pair to set the time origin for electro-optic modulation of the wave function of the anti-Stokes photon thereby allowing arbitrary phase and amplitude modulation. We demonstrate conditional single-photon wave functions composed of several pulses, or instead, having Gaussian or exponential shapes.
