Electrical Testing for Detection and Classification of Open Damper Bar and Shorted Field Winding Failures in Wound Field Synchronous Motors

Broken damper bars and shorted field winding turns degrade the starting running performance of industrial wound synchronous motors (WFSMs), can lead to a forced outage motor driven process. Testing WFSM rotor windings mainly relies on offline tests, which cannot be performed frequently are known lack reliability. Shorted in detected online from airgap flux measurement, but require sensor installed stator bore. In this article, new test methods for detecting classifying faults based electrical signals proposed. The proposed provide remote testing at standstill during transient without disassembling motor. Test results 30 kW, salient pole show that both reliable detection classification faults.
