Electric resistance measurement–based structural health monitoring with multifunctional carbon fibers: Predicting, sensing, and measuring overload

چکیده
Polymer matrix composites that also contain carbon fiber reinforcement can be given a secondary function in addition to load bearing due the electrical conductivity of reinforcing fiber. We investigated how measure deformation composite by measuring resistance and indicate its current or previous overload. found bundle initially increases linearly then progressively during testing specimens, finally, when snaps, circuit breaks. have shown cyclic overload exceeding reversible detected measured examining first derivative change with respect deformation. Based on our results, electric measurements either an only fiber-reinforced hybrid used detect possible component unknown history.

Title : Multifunctional Sensing Skins for Structural Health Monitoring for Fifth International Workshop on Structural Control and Monitoring 2008
The integrity and safety of metallic structures can be jeopardized by structural damage (e.g., yielding, cracking, impact, corrosion) that can occur any time. While various sensors have been proposed and validated for structural health monitoring, most sensors only provide data at a discrete point on the structure. Here, a carbon nanotube-polyelectrolyte sensing skin is proposed for monitoring ...
متن کاملStrain and Damage Sensing Property of Self-compacting Concrete Reinforced with Carbon Fibers
Present paper investigated the strain and damage sensing property on concrete cubes embedded with carbon fibers. Concrete cubes of dimension 150 mm have been casted with different concentration of carbon fibers to study the strain and damage sensing property under cyclic loading that can be further used for health monitoring as non-destructive testing (NDT) approach. All the specimens were test...
متن کاملSmart Sensing Technology for Structural Health Monitoring
“Smart” sensors with embedded microprocessors and wireless communication links have the potential to fundamentally change the way civil infrastructure systems are monitored, controlled, and maintained. Indeed, a 2002 National Research Council Report [1] noted that the use of networked systems of embedded computers and sensors throughout society could well dwarf all previous milestones in the in...
متن کاملNetworked Sensing for Structural Health Monitoring
1 This paper describes an ongoing project investigating embedded networked sensing for structural health monitoring applications. The vision is of many low-power sensor “motes” embedded throughout the structure with a smaller number of nodes that can provide local excitation. The challenge is to develop both the networking algorithms to reliably communicate within the network, and distributed a...
متن کاملStrong, light, multifunctional fibers of carbon nanotubes with ultrahigh conductivity.
Broader applications of carbon nanotubes to real-world problems have largely gone unfulfilled because of difficult material synthesis and laborious processing. We report high-performance multifunctional carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers that combine the specific strength, stiffness, and thermal conductivity of carbon fibers with the specific electrical conductivity of metals. These fibers consist of...
