Elastically induced magnetization at ultrafast time scales in a chiral helimagnet

چکیده

Chiral helimagnetic materials have recently attracted much attention for spintronic applications due to their long-range helical magnetic order, topological spin textures, and potential hosting skyrmions. Their robust texture would provide a new concept of ultrafast memory if it can be controlled by an optical pulse. Using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy, we show that magnetism in the single-crystalline chiral helimagnet ${\text{Cr}}_{1/3}{\text{NbS}}_{2}$ induced At low temperatures absence fields, exhibits phase with but contains zero net magnetization. However, after laser pulse excitation observe magnetization forming over tens picoseconds, far exceeding duration We attribute this peculiar behavior laser-induced transition from phase, magnetization, conical finite Ab initio density functional calculations detailed microscopic picture mechanism behind observation. The resonant magnon-phonon coupling specific phonons leads elastic deformation phase. Finally, at is excited precesses around equilibrium position, leading anomalous precession as function external field phases.

Chiral magnetic soliton lattice on a chiral helimagnet.

Using Lorenz microscopy and small-angle electron diffraction, we directly present that the chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL) continuously evolves from a chiral helimagnetic structure in small magnetic fields in Cr(1/3)NbS2. An incommensurate CSL undergoes a phase transition to a commensurate ferromagnetic state at the critical field strength. The period of a CSL, which exerts an effective p...

Ultrafast laser induced local magnetization dynamics in Heusler compounds

The overarching goal of the field of femtomagnetism is to control, via laser light, the magnetic structure of matter on a femtosecond time scale. The temporal limits to the light-magnetism interaction are governed by the fact that the electron spin interacts indirectly with light, with current studies showing a laser induced global loss in the magnetic moment on a time scale of the order of a f...

Unifying ultrafast magnetization dynamics.

We present a microscopic model that successfully explains the ultrafast equilibration of magnetic order in ferromagnetic metals at a time scale tau(M) of only a few hundred femtoseconds after pulsed laser excitation. It is found that tau(M) can be directly related to the so-called Gilbert damping factor sigma that describes damping of GHz precessional motion of the magnetization vector. Indepen...

Ultrafast magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic materials

In recent magneto optical experiments (TR-MOKE) the timescale of laser induced demagnetization was found to be shorter than 0.5 ps. However, doubts have been raised if the measured signal reflects genuine loss of magnetic moment at all. Also, for these experiments no broadly accepted theory exists. Although a few models are able to fit the data, they generally have in common that they violate o...
