Elasmobranch Diversity at Reunion Island (Western Indian Ocean) and Catches by Recreational Fishers and a Shark Control Program

چکیده
Elasmobranchs are declining worldwide due to overfishing. In developing countries and island states in tropical regions, small-scale recreational fisheries can significantly impact the dynamics of neritic species. We investigated elasmobranch diversity at Reunion Island, a marine biodiversity hotspot Western Indian Ocean. Combining information from literature, catches local shark control program, results survey fishing, through barcoding some specimens, we updated list elasmobranchs 65 However, uncertainties remain about actual presence species, such as three sawfish Results highlight disappearance most coral reef-associated already suspected. also suggest that populations scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) bottlenose wedgefish (Rhynchobatus australiae) seem healthy, contrast with their decline region. For bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) sharks, Island is site reproduction, such, species exploited both juvenile adult stages, which likely increases vulnerability. context global decline, it urgent clarify conservation status evaluate degree isolation identify research priorities.

Trace Elements in Three Marine Birds Breeding on Reunion Island (Western Indian Ocean): Part 2 - Factors Influencing Their Detoxification (Western Indian Ocean): Part 2 - Factors Influencing Their Detoxification
Seabird tissues collected between 2002 and 2004 from Barau’s Petrel (Pterodroma baraui), Audubon’s Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri bailloni), and White-Tailed Trop icbird (Phaethon lepturus) colonies on Reunion Island were analyzed for metallothioneins (MTs) and trace element content. The subcellular distribution between soluble and insoluble fractions of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, and Zn was determi...

BACKGROUND Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is responsible for acute febrile polyarthralgia and, in a proportion of cases, severe complications including chronic arthritis. CHIKV has spread recently in East Africa, South-West Indian Ocean, South-Asia and autochthonous cases have been reported in Europe. Although almost all patients are outpatients, medical investigations mainly focused on hospitalised...
متن کاملSeasonality of Human Leptospirosis in Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) and Its Association with Meteorological Data
BACKGROUND Leptospirosis is a disease which occurs worldwide but particularly affects tropical areas. Transmission of the disease is dependent on its excretion by reservoir animals and the presence of moist environment which allows the survival of the bacteria. METHODS AND FINDINGS A retrospective study was undertaken to describe seasonal patterns of human leptospirosis cases reported by the ...
متن کاملTrace elements in three marine birds breeding on Reunion Island (Western Indian ocean): part 1-factors influencing their bioaccumulation.
This work aimed to use seabirds as bioindicators of trace element levels in the tropical waters and food webs of the Western Indian Ocean. The accumulation patterns of selected toxic (Cd and Hg) and essential (Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, and Zn) elements were determined in liver, kidney, and pectoral muscle of 162 marine birds belonging to 3 species collected in Reunion Island between 2002 and 2004. These ...
متن کاملEnergetic Performance of a Green Roof in the Tropical Environment of La Reunion Island (indian Ocean)
The green roof technology provides environmental benefits by protecting the base roof membrane of buildings against solar radiation and temperature fluctuations and by helping to reduce building’s energy consumption by direct shading. Although several investigations have been performed to explore the energy performance of vegetated roofs as natural cooling devices, there is a lack of data conce...
