Efficient sugar production from plant biomass: Current status, challenges, and future directions

Lignocellulosic plant biomass is recognized as an alternative resource for sustainable production of liquid fuels, chemicals, and polymeric materials through the biorefining concept. The sugar platform one promising approaches commercial conversion cellulose and/or hemicelluloses in into targeted products biologically chemically carbohydrate saccharification. However, efficient, from lignocellulose remains a great challenge because natural recalcitrance to deconstruction. This review aims provide current understanding key barriers saccharification, critical assessment available technologies lignocellulose, including chemical enzymatic approaches, potential strategies overcome development. Special attention paid lignin-induced inhibition hydrolysis lignocellulosic substrates pretreatment/fractionation methods or decrease recalcitrance. Perspectives future research needs are also presented.
