Efficacy of topical vancomycin application in cardiac surgery to reduce deep sternal wound infection: a randomised control trial at tertiary cardiac care hospital

Background: Mediastinitis is lethal complication and a challenge in post cardiac surgery patients. We aim at evaluation of topical vancomycin by applying it sternal edge prevention deep wound infection.Methods: The group had local application paste prepared mixing 1gm powder 3 ml normal saline stirred until was formed. control reinforced closure technique without application. All cases were followed up for symptoms signs infection during hospital stay uptil 1 month.Results: There increase incidence with as compared to group, there no patients group.Conclusions: Application significantly reduces post-sternotomy prevents mediastinitis.
