Efficacy of endoscopic ultrasound‐guided abscess drainage for non‐pancreatic abscesses: A retrospective study

Background and Aim Percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses is often uncomfortable for the patient may result in prolonged hospital stays. Recent studies have shown that endoscopic ultrasound-guided abscess (EUS-AD) could effectively treat various fluid collections. However, no indications or procedures been established EUS-AD treatments, on its usefulness safety are insufficient. The present study aimed to evaluate efficacy treating non-pancreatic abscesses. Methods This retrospective included 20 patients, aged ≥20 years, who underwent an accumulation abdomen mediastinum, but not pancreas. Patients were treated at Kawasaki University General Medical Center between March 2013 June 2021. All performed prior a percutaneous surgical drainage. Results Among patients abscess, 8 (40%) had liver abscesses, 6 (30%) intraperitoneal 3 (15%) splenic 1 (5%) mediastinal iliopsoas (n = 1, 5%), abdominal wall abscess. technical success rate was 95% 19/20). We inserted nasobiliary catheters 4/20 (20%). clinical 90% 18/20). Two failures required reintervention, both with Adverse events observed 2/20 (10%). One experienced fever after procedure, other localized peritonitis. Conclusion effective safe removal, particularly when approached from upper gastrointestinal tract.
