Effects of Nocturnal Aircraft Noise and Non-Acoustical Factors on Short-Term Annoyance in Primary School Children

Children are considered at higher risk for harmful noise effects due to their sensitive development phase. Here, we investigated the of nocturnal aircraft exposure on short-term annoyance assessed in morning 51 primary school children (8–10 years) living surrounding community Cologne-Bonn Airport. Child-appropriate assessments and associated non-acoustical variables were surveyed. Nocturnal was recorded inside children’s bedrooms. Exposure–response models calculated by using random logistic regression models. The present data compared with those from a previous study near Airport adults very similar methodology. Short-term reaction not affected exposure. Non-acoustical factors (e.g., attitude that “aircraft dangerous” or sensitivity), however, significantly impacted annoyance. In contrast children, probability moderate high increased number flyovers during time bed. It is concluded mainly determined factors. Unlike adults, acoustical did play significant role.
