Effects of laboratory salmon louse infection on mortality, growth, and sexual maturation in Atlantic salmon

چکیده

Abstract Elevated salmon louse infection pressure generated by farming represents a major threat for wild Atlantic (Salmo salar). This study explored the effect of lice on mortality, and body gonad growth in F1 salmon. Mature males (jacks) immature fish were either infected with two different intensities (LIIs, 0.08 or 0.35 g−1) kept as uninfected controls. Fish maturation was thereafter environmentally stimulated seawater, followed transfer to freshwater 38 d simulate river ascendance. No females matured, while 99% initially started puberty. Jacks had high, maturing low, seawater independent lice. The parasites an LII-dependent negative length, weight, condition factor seawater. In freshwater, after detached, that previously reduced length but not weight when compared control. did affect relative size any phenotypes. present results show has complex, unexplored, regulation recovering from under laboratory settings. Further, suggest possible effects reproductive success is most likely governed condition. However, further work semen quality encouraged.

Infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) mucosal infection in Atlantic salmon

All viruses infecting fish must cross the surface mucosal barrier to successfully enter a host. Infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV), the causative agent of the economically important infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., has been shown to use the gills as its entry point. However, other entry ports have not been investigated despite the expression of virus recep...

The effect of light on the settlement of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is an ectoparasitic copepod that infests both wild and farmed salmonid fish. Salmon lice are a major disease problem in the farming of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and the possibility of salmon lice playing a role in the decline of wild anadromous stocks has also been raised. Lepeophtheirus salmonis can detect a range of stimuli (pressure/moving wa...

Temporal Patterns of Sea Louse Infestation on Wild Pacific Salmon in Relation to the Fallowing of Atlantic Salmon Farms

—We report on a 3-year study of the infestation rates of the sea louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, on wild juvenile pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and chum salmon O. keta in the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia. In 2002, the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food ordered farm fallowing (i.e., the removal of farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from net-cages) along...

Atlantic Salmon Reovirus Infection Causes a CD8 T Cell Myocarditis in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.)

Heart and skeletal inflammation (HSMI) of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is a disease characterized by a chronic myocarditis involving the epicardium and the compact and spongious part of the heart ventricle. Chronic myositis of the red skeletal muscle is also a typical finding of HSMI. Piscine reovirus (PRV) has been detected by real-time PCR from farmed and wild salmon with and witho...

Growth-history perspective on the decreasing age and size at maturation of exploited Atlantic salmon

Decreases in age and size at maturation have been reported for several exploited fish populations, but little is known about possible changes in individual growth trajectories in the course of exploitation. We investigated changes in growth, age and size at maturation in a declining Atlantic salmon Salmo salar population subjected to strong fishing pressure. Based on historical catch records an...
