Effects of Hormonal Contraception Use on Cognitive Functions in Patients With Bulimia Nervosa

Background: Growing evidences indicate that sex hormones have an effect on cognitive functions, and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is associated with impairment. The aim of this study was to determine the hormonal contraception (HC) use four functions are impaired in patients BN. Methods: This retrospective exploratory included 103 women a diagnosis BN based DSM-5 criteria. Their age ranged from 15 45 years, 46.6% were taking HC (oral, transdermal, or intrauterine). Cognition assessed d2 test (attention), Iowa gambling task (IGT; decision making), Brixton spatial anticipation (set shifting), Rey-Osterrieth complex figure (central coherence). Data analyzed logistic regression models estimate adjusted odds ratios (OR) 95% confidence intervals (CI) neuropsychological scores. Results: In multivariate model, significantly better scores for two indices: F-score [OR = 0.98, CI (0.95; 0.99)] final total score ratio 0.87, (0.77; 0.99)]. also understanding IGT explicit rules. No difference between groups (HC non-HC use) detected set shifting central coherence. Conclusions: suggests could effects sustained attention concentration More studies needed confirm these results.
